Music NFTs Explained - What are music NFTs?

As you might already know, NFTs stand for non-fungible tokens, which are digital assets that live on a blockchain. NFTs are pieces of data that are stored on the blockchain and cannot be changed, however they can be sold or traded. Transactions of NFTs can be done using cryptocurrency wallets such as MetaMask. Most NFT trades happen on NFT marketplaces where people and buy and sell NFTs with one another.

While we commonly recognise NFTs to be visual assets, such as the famous Bored Ape Yacht Club collection, music NFTs are simply NFTs that have a musical component to it. In 2021, the band Kings of Leon famously released their album “When You See Yourself” as an NFT on the same day it was available on streaming platforms. So the question is – why buy a music NFT at all?

With sales of physical albums dwindling and the low income from streaming platforms, many musicians see music NFTs as a new way to monetize their work. It also allows them to interact with fans in ways that have never been done before. Kings of Leon had granted its NFT owners front-row seats to their live shows, exclusive art, and even threw in a special album package to boot.

Besides that, like a physical CD or record, a music NFT can also be sold at a later time by its owner. The music being stored on the blockchain will also mean that its owners can listen to the song at any point in time, as long as the blockchain still exists. How to Create a Music NFT?

If you’re a musician, creating music NFTs might be the next best move for your brand! Here’s how you can create your own music NFT collection in minutes on OpenSea!

Step 1: Generate Artwork Without Coding (Or Drawing!)

To launch a music NFT project, aside from the music, you’ll also need some artwork. We recommend you use Nifty Generator for the artwork as you simply need to upload image layers of the different traits and determine its rarity.

Once you have decided on these details, simply arrange your assets into folders of the different traits, import all your assets to the platform, and it automatically generates the images for you.

Step 2: Build NFTs Without Coding

That’s right, you do not need to know how to code in order to launch an NFT project. Rampp is a service that generates the necessary code for your smart contracts so you will not need to hire a developer and you will still be the owner of your project.

They’ve made the process really simple. First, link your Metamask to Rampp. Next, you’ll have to set up your images and the metadata on IPFS. The next step is to create your smart contract. Fill in your project information and set royalties. At this stage, you should do all the testing you’ll want to do on the testnet before launching your project for real. When you’re ready, make sure your wallet has ETH and then you can finally deploy to the Mainnet!

Step 3: Launching on an NFT Marketplace

OpenSea is currently the largest NFT marketplace and it has made it easy for NFT creators with no coding experience. Their lazy minting option has allowed NFT creators to easily mint without paying gas fees for deploying on the blockchain, that is, until somebody buys an NFT.

Here’s a quick guide on how you can launch on OpenSea!

Head to OpenSea’s create collection page and fill in the details, then hit the Create button at the bottom of the screen.

Once you get to your collection page, start adding items!

Once you click create, a confirmation screen will appear. This NFT is now published in your collection!

If you are using Rampp to launch your minting website, a collection will automatically be created when the first NFT is minted, in which you can then go and edit the details of the collection on OpenSea.

How to Create a Music NFT Minting Website

If you want to create a large collection of music NFTs and allow fans to mint them on your website, creating a minting website is the way to go. Here’s how you can get started with your own music NFT minting website from scratch:

Build A Minting Website Without Coding

If you used Rampp, you would’ve also seen that they too recommend Typedream for building a website without coding. You can start out with a free account and it’s straight into building your website from there! Choose the Web3 template and start building with an NFT Minting page.

They’ve made it extremely easy to build a website from scratch without needing to know any type of code. You really just need the NFT Minting page, but we do recommend that you include some marketing fluff explaining what the project is all about. Then, you need to add an embedded widget to your website – you can get this embed code from Rampp, which you simply paste into Typedream.

Now you have a minting page too!

Music NFT Marketplaces

You might already be familiar with OpenSea which is currently one of the largest NFT marketplaces. They also offer music NFTs which can be found here.

Other popular platforms offer music NFTs as well, such as SuperRare, Nifty Gateway, Rarible, and Binance NFT.

There are also quite a few music-focused NFT marketplaces such as onlymusix, Serenade, and Async Music.

Popular Music NFTs

Here’s a list of some of the hottest music NFTs at the moment!

Steve Aoki – Piss On the Dance Floor (Goblintown Anthem)

Steve Aoki, famous DJ, record producer, and NFT supporter, released this music NFT for the first 250 attendees of the Goblintown afterparty in 2022 and 250 raffle winners of the A0K1VERSE pre-mint.

Kings of Leon – When You See Yourself

This is arguably the one project that paved the way for music NFTs and brought the mainstream music industry to Web3. The album released in 2021 made Kings of Leon the first band to release an album as an NFT. It is also the first NFT song to be played in space!

Snoop Dogg – B.O.D.R.

Snoop Dogg, also another famous artiste who’s a fan of NFTs, had purchased the records label Death Row and announced plans to turn it into an NFT record label. Snoop released a few music NFTs from his album “Bacc on Death Row” in a collaboration with Gala Music.

Mount Westmore

The hip-hop supergroup consisting of Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E40, and Too Short just released their debut album, “Bad MFs”, also through a collaboration with Gala Music. The group is signed to Snoop’s NFT record label, Death Row Records.

Summary

Music NFTs might just be the next thing for the industry. While physical CDs are declining in popularity and streaming services paying very little in royalties, music NFTs could provide monetization opportunities for musicians. Not only that, but web3 technology offers musicians new ways to interact with fans that have never been done before. Owners can also sell their music NFTs at a later time, just like a physical CD or record. With so many advantages, musicians should seriously consider music NFTs for their next project.
